Introduction to the Department of Urology, Singapore General Hospital
Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is the nation’s largest and oldest tertiary referral academic medical center, serving as the flagship hospital of Singapore’s public healthcare system. Internationally renowned for excellence in clinical care, research, and education, SGH is consistently ranked among the top hospitals globally.
The Department of Urology at SGH is the first urology department established in Singapore and remains one of the largest and most comprehensive tertiary and quaternary urology centers in the region. We deliver a full spectrum of efficient, high-quality care for a broad range of urological conditions - from common disorders to complex and rare diseases.
As a pioneering institution, the department has achieved numerous national and international firsts. These include being the first center in Asia to perform robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and leading innovations such as invention of the world’s first robotic-assisted MRI-ultrasound fusion-targeted prostate biopsy system, and the introduction of audio uroflowmetry in functional urology. We continue to lead in minimally invasive therapies including robotic, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery.
Our excellence is not limited to clinical service. The department maintains a strong and growing commitment to both basic and translational research, driven by a team of prominent clinician-scientists whose work has garnered international recognition. These research efforts not only advance the field but also support evidence-based innovations that directly benefit patient care. We are equally dedicated to the training of future leaders in urology. By attracting outstanding trainee residents and nurturing their development through a rigorous academic and clinical environment, the department ensures a pipeline of skilled, compassionate, and forward-thinking urologists.
Consistently recognized as a top global center in urology, SGH Urology actively engages with international collaborators and hosts visiting fellows worldwide. Through our annual flagship event, The Urology Week, we foster professional exchange, collaboration, and continued learning, enhancing our international visibility and impact.
We remain committed to innovation, research, and partnerships - with local healthcare providers, academic institutions, and global peers - to push the boundaries of urological care and to shape the future of urology and transform patient outcomes.
